What Are Nasolabial Folds – And Can Filler Really Help?

You know those little smile lines that run from the sides of your nose down to the corners of your mouth? They’re called nasolabial folds  and while they’re totally normal, they can start to deepen over time and make us look tired, drawn or older than we feel.

In clinic, I treat lots of clients who ask:

“Can filler fix these lines?” “Will it look too much?” “What actually causes them to show up so strongly?”

Here’s everything you need to know.

Why Do Nasolabial Folds Get Deeper?

These folds are natural, everyone has them to some degree. But as we age, a few things happen:

  • We lose volume in the cheeks and mid-face

  • Our skin becomes less firm and elastic

  • Gravity and expression lines start to show more prominently

  • The support structure that keeps the face looking “lifted” starts to relax

All of that means the area below the cheek starts to fold more heavily, especially when smiling or talking. It can create a shadow or heaviness that makes the lower face look more tired than it really is.

So, Can Filler Help?

Yes, but probably not in the way you think.

A lot of people assume we inject directly into the lines. Sometimes we do, but often, the best results come from rebuilding volume higher up, like in the cheeks or mid-face.

Here’s what filler can do:

  • Gently lift and soften the fold

  • Restore youthful volume and structure

  • Smooth the area without making it look puffy or overdone

It’s about balance not changing how you look, but refreshing and softening the signs of ageing that have crept in.

What Does Treatment Involve?

  • It’s a quick, non-surgical procedure

  • Minimal discomfort (numbing cream is used)

  • You’ll see results straight away, with full settling over 1–2 weeks

  • Most people return to normal activities immediately

  • Results typically last 6–12 months depending on lifestyle and product used

Is It Right for You?

If you’re noticing those lines becoming deeper or your makeup is starting to sit in them, nasolabial filler could be a lovely option. It's also a great entry point into tweakments if you're not ready for full mid-face filler or cheek work.

I always start with a full consultation so we can talk through what’s bothering you, how your face is ageing and what would work best for you.

No pressure. No one-size-fits-all. It is always bespoke to you, your needs and of course your skin.
